Twinmusix chat with Brock from 36 Crazyfits about their new Album Lanterns
Your new album is coming out soon what can fans expect?
I think it's a good balance of everything out band can do You do have the heavy metal the melodic metal The acoustic and the dirty rock vibe. It is a good balance of everything we've done in that past. It's the best version of our band yet we are excited about it.
Awesome album cover how did you come up with it?
It's a stretch of road from where I live in Anchorage to the ski village town of Girdwood Alaska. And I would go there pretty much every Saturday. i would just go out there and have this vision of this man walking into the vast bleakness of that mountain landscape that's just beautiful number one. And a man walking where is he walking why is he going that way. What's he walking away from. What's he walking to. Had this whole idea I sat down with my good buddy Steven cornfield who did all the art. I explained my vision and by the end of the night, he had almost what was the exact album cover art that ended up on the real album. He just knocked it out of the park for us. Really listened to what I was trying to explain. I really like the album layout it cool.
What’s your favourite song of your new album?
I think its changed several times. As I've had the finished album but I really like the track old gold. Which is one of the last songs on there. It's got some really cool vocal things that I like to listen to.
How did you pick the name 36 Crazyfits for your band? What’s the story behind it?
Our guitar player is the one that came up with the name and it was one of Jackie Chan's first films. I didn’t even know who Jackie Chan was at the time back in 1994. So when it was first brought up. I didn’t know what he was talking about. So it's one of those names I don’t know if we love it but it stuck for twenty-three years.
How is touring with devil driver how is that going?
It's going great. We love those guys. We toured with them many times over the years. They are dear friends of ours so we are stoked to be out with them for a couple more weeks.
If you could have any band perform one of your songs which band and song would you choose and would it be in your style or there’s?
Our first single off the new album which is Death Eater, City in colour, Dallas green he's got a beautiful voice. Id like to see him do something like that acoustically his style.
How did you come up with your music video for bloodwork?
I don’t remember. But we had a lot of fun doing it. It was probably one of the bigger sets we had ever been on. They closed down china town for us. It was in new york city. I don’t remember who came up with the treatment. It dons't have anything to do with the lyrical content but it was fun to do.
Who writes the music in your band or do you all write it together?
my guitar player is the start of all of it. He lays down the roadmap for it. I do all the lyrics and most of the vocal melodies, I get a bit of help from the boys, here and there when they have ideas, or if I'm stuck on something. Everyone puts in there two science. I don’t do the actual music part. My department is strictly lyrics and vocals. But everyone helps each other for the most part.
Do you prefer playing festivals or small shows?
If the small show is a packed out room, I definitely like that but the festivals are cool too. I don’t like at festivals how far the crowd is from the stage. There's a little bit of a distance there I never feel as connected as I do on a small stage. So I guess I prefer the smaller room to be honest.
What’s your favourite concert memory?
I saw Journey in 1986 it was my first concert I wast in 5th or 6th grade and I went with my aunt. I've seen Pantera, Metallica in the 90s it was pretty special ive seen the booth of those bands a few times. I never got to see Alice in Chains with Layne Staley he is my faviorte melodic vocalist I would have loved to have seen that.
When you go on tour how often do you change your set list?
Since we are supporting Devil Driver we only get forty-five minutes. We have to try to get a decent balance. Of new songs we want to play and the old stuff. But when we go into the headliner right out of this. We will probably play an hour and a half. We try to switch it up here and there. We are not pearl jam who changed the set list every day. That's pretty incredible. Thinking about all the songs they have. We try to keep it fresh but we get in a mode where we are real comfortable with the set.
Any random facts that your fans don’t know?
Ever since I was a young boy I've loved to take baths and I still like a nice hot bath. We joked about this album being called tub talk. Because I wrote probably half the album in the bathtub.
