DON BROCO
Don Broco are an English rock band formed in Bedford, England in 2008. The band consists of Rob Damiani, Simon Delaney, Tom Doyle and Matt Donnelly.
Twinmusix were lucky enough to get a interview with the one and only Don Broco! And we are so excited that Don Broco are visiting Sydney Australia in December 2017!
IN 2008 YOU RELASED YOUR EP THUG WORKOUT HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR SOUND HAS CHANGED FROM THEN TO NOW?
When we wrote our EP we were still at school it was the first thing we wrote we loved heavy music and still do love heavy music. We put this really weird song together which was the most fun ever we weren’t even thinking about it like this is a cool riff let’s put a rap section in here. We didn’t really think about it as a song in the normal sense of the word but so many people seemed to love it we thought wow let’s put it out and let people have it. Then after school and uni when we decide we wanted to be a band probably and take it really seriously and go on tour we started writing new material. At that point we were taking influence from a really wide range of guitar music but we also listened to RNB and prince. Our sound evolved in a way were we wanted to keep it heavy guitar vibe but we also wanted that smooth pop element in there as well and it all started to blend into this sound which now we know as Don Broco.
YOU TOURED WITH YOU ME AT SIX IN 2014 WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE TOUR?
That was the first time we got to go to Ireland with those guys. It’s really exciting for bands as it’s not very easy to get to for a touring band and it’s quite expensive to get there. But the you me at six guys were doing a couple of really big shows one in Dublin and one in Belfast. And for us it was the first shows in Ireland that we could make work for the band so we went over there and getting to play for the Irish crowd was incredible it was all thanks to those guys taking a chance on us and bringing us over with them so that was one of my fondest memories.
ARE THERE ANY CRAZY STORIES YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH US?
The bass player matt is a bit of a animal when we were in Ireland we were doing some bonding with you me at six and he showed us how to make a cocktail which was a lot of rum a small amount of coke and whatever else you could find like some whisky and tequila and it was horrendous but we had a pretty wild night with him making the drinks.
DO YOU PREFER TO PLAY AREANA SHOWS OR SMALL SHOWS?
That’s difficult they are booth really fun and bring different things. We love playing small shows because as a band that’s were we came from we played years and years of small shows. I love being in peoples face I love the energy and through a crappy sound system its super loud and feels like pure carnage it’s so much fun. But the arena shows you step on stage and it feels like everything you dreamed of when you were a little kid you’re in a band playing in front of thousands of people it’s over whelming. If I had to play one kind of show for the rest of my life I would take the small shows because I like the human connection and you don’t get that in the bigger shows. Where as in the small shows you have people two meters from your face the whites of their eyes just loving it there’s nothing quite like that.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY BAND IN THE WORLD PEFORM ONE OF YOUR SONGS WHICH ONE WOULD IT IS AND WOULD IT BE IN YOUR STYLE OR THERES?
The band called Against Me because they are super raw and no bullshit and I would like to hear some of our songs played like that. With our music its very tasteful and well produced and very thought about but with them I get this super energy from the lyrics there is no bullshit it’s amazing and I would love to hear a band like that tackle one of our songs because that’s so far removed from how we produce our music. Probably our song what you do to me on our last album.
COULD YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC MAKING PROCESS?
Normally ill come up with a tone of ideas like musical sketches for a verse, chorus and put something alright sounding together. Give matt and rob an idea of what I invasion the song sounding like. I’ll send them that verse and chorus or 5 different songs at a time and normally not even one of them will make it through the cut because they will listen to them and try to come up with vocals and melodies and if we can’t find a chorus we will abandon the song we write in volume to find the diamond in the ruff.
WHATS YOUR CRAZIEST FAN STORY?
Once we were playing a show in our home town and when we do these home town shows it’s quite cool because our original fans will come to the show and fans will buy tickets and come from a long way away. We were in our home town before the show getting something to eat and we were walking around town and we spotted this girl who’s our big fan and we went over and said hi to her. She was with her mum and grandad and they were also coming to the show so we had never meet the grandad before and we said it’s so nice you are coming to the show and that you drove your daughter and granddaughter down. He said in a normal serious way I haven’t been to a show in a long time ever science I threw my back out but science the aliens took me up and gave me the surgery it’s all been fine. We were just looked at each other like is he joking about his surgery but then he went on and said because the human doctors didn’t have the instruments to heal his spine.
YOU BROUGHT OUT A VEDIO GAME CALLED TECHONLOGY WHAT WAS THE INSPERATION BEHIND THAT GAME?
We shot a video for that song which was about alien abduction and we are not obsessed with alien abduction I promise you but coincidentally the video we shot for that was all about aliens. The last three videos we have done with this company in America that have made ideas we send them a song and ask them what the video should be and they say this one’s going to be about aliens or this one’s going to be about cowboys. And for technology the wanted to do an alien abduction video. It was really good we were really stoked with it. Then this really cool dude approached us and said I make video games do you want me to make you one and we said sure then he said how about I make one for technology where you guys fight the aliens from your video and it came out super well. It was cool because it wasn’t something we went out looking for this legend approached us and said do you want me to do it.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BAND NAME?
After school when we were starting the band probably saying we need a good name because previously we had been called club sex and you can’t have a proper band called club sex it would put two many people off the band before they even heard us. But in hindsight I don’t think it would have done me think club sex is a pretty cool name. So we were looking at changing the name and we always go through cycles of saying words and at the time we were saying the word don so if someone did something cool or someone was a legend you would say man you’re the don. And we liked the word loco if we did something crazy so we thought don loco was a cool name we should have that. Then we did what you always do when you look for a band name and someone already had it. It was some German rapper that isn’t a thing but when you put it into Google it came up so we couldn’t have don loco. During that period I was playing five a side football I broke my wrist one of my friends tackled me and I fell down and my wrist snapped and I came to work the next day in a cast. And I worked with our singer rob I came into work with my cast on and he said check it out its Don Broco. Then we said don Broco that’s kind of cool we goggled it and the words came up and we were desperate so we decided to take the name.
WHATS YOUR FAVIORTE SONG TO PEFORM LIVE?
One of our newer songs called pretty which we started playing in May. We were on tour with a band called state champs in the USA. We thought this is awesome we are playing to a super new audience lets crack out a new song because there’s not much pressure on playing it in the USA. So we thought we will start playing it here and get it super tight and when we get back to the UK and play for our own fans we will be really good at playing it. So we played it in the states and twice in the UK. And at a festival called slam dunk and it went down really well. And this weekend we played a festival called reading Leeds festival we opened with it and it was crazy. It was that moment that you hope for where you write a song and everyone is singing the words to the intro and drop a big riff and its crazy exactly like we always thought it would and thought sweet this is what we dreamed of when we wrote this song and the effects we desired and easy to play so I don’t have to concentrate on what I’m doing just run around and go a bit mad.
WHATS YOUR FAVIOURATE FESTIVAL YOU HAVE PLAYED?
Reading festival is the best festival I’ve played it was a festival when we were growing up and kids we always went to it. It had the best line up it had all our favourite bands there. We were going to that festival science we were 15. We grew up with it and always playing it we decide at reading festival we wanted to be a band. And they have always been incredible nurturing is as a band when we started we got to play the smaller stage and every year through the ranks they have been supportive we love the festival it feels like home.
