Katatonia
TM - Hi, this is Amelia and Elizabeth from Twinmusix and we are here with Niklas from Katatonia, thank you for having this interview with us today, we appreciate it.
NS - Thank You for having me.
TM - We are excited to have you come to Australia, what can fans expect?
NS - Fans can expect us to put out lots of energy for our live show. We are excited to be back, it is something that we have anticipated for a long time. We haven't been back to Australia and due to being so far away. We don't always get back to Australia in each touring cycle, it is very exciting and we are looking forward to coming back.
TM - What can fans expect from your setlist?
NS - They can expect a mix of old and new music and some new music from our new album Sky Void of Stars.
TM - Is there anything you would like to see while you are here?
NS - We would love to see some tourist attractions but we are not sure if we have any time because we have to fly every day and play a show at night. We will need some rest between shows, but if anyone has any ideas of what we can see we would love to hear them.
TM - You could walk down to the opera house and see the harbour bridge. There is a bar under the opera house called Opera Bar which has a really good view of the harbour.
NS - That would be nice to go to under the opera house. I hope the venue is near the opera house and we will have some time to make it over there.
TM - The weather is nice here.
NS - The weather is really bad here, so I would rather have a beer at the Opera Bar.
TM - You brought out Sky Void of Stars last year, what was your writing and recording process?
NS - Normally it's Jonas writing the music. He is the Mastermind of what we put out lately so he writes everything in his home studio where he has everything he needs he programs the drums and programs the bass. Then he will send out snippets of these songs and you have the shell of what it will sound like later. Then the songs get completed and he sends that out and then we all start rehearsing at our little private home Studios. Then we can contribute with our own instruments. As a bass player, I feel like there should be some different parts, he is very open minded and open to what I want and sometimes I think it is good and sometimes I think it is not so good. Then we come and meet halfway and do something together in terms of that and as bands do these days record everything separately like the drums were recorded down in Denmark and then we continue with guitar bass and vocals. Then the ambient tracks appear in Stockholm and then you have something you hope people want to listen to for a long time.
TM - Are you working on any new music?
NS - We are always working on new music, that's how Jones works. We have to start writing new music, he is a never-ending source of new music he has probably already started fiddling with new songs, so hopefully sometime soon we will have new music out.
TM - I saw you are playing 70,000 tons of metal, are you excited?
NS - I think we also played 70,000 tons of metal back in 2016 when we came to Australia so it has been a while. It is due time to go back on that boat. There is great weather and cold drinks and it is vastly different to the cold weather in Stockholm. It is going to be amazing and there are always good friends on the boat and people you haven't seen in a while.
There are going to be a few people from Finland that are playing on the boat that I haven't seen since the beginning of the pandemic, it is going to be quite a nice way to kick off this exotic tour for us and we going to play Japan as well.
TM - Japan is so much fun.
NS - We have never been there before, and we are looking forward to it. We also get to ride one of those exotic bullet trains between Tokyo and Osaka, which I am excited about.
TM - That's awesome, if you get a clear day you should be able to see Mount Fuji.
NS - That's amazing, I hope I get to see it.
TM - If you could have any band play one of your songs, which band would it be, which song would it be and would it be in your style or their style?
NS - Paramore in the era that they released their self-titled album, that would be pretty cool. Doing leaders in their style, with Hayley Williams vocals on that track.
TM - What's your favourite memory of watching someone else perform live, can you tell us a story?
NS - My favourite memory is recently. I was watching Super Jesus with my girlfriend here in Stockholm and he was playing the grand piano and playing her discography with a grand piano. Her voice was nice with the grand piano in an intimate scenario. It was super cool and spine chilling in a good way, it was super powerful and worked very well. It was nice that it wasn't the full band. It was deconstructed it was just her and the piano. She connected with the audience and came out after the show. She came out to the Merch table and said hi to everyone who wanted to greet her and she was nice it happened about three months ago.
TM - Is there anything else you want to say to your fans?
NS - I want to send out gratitude and thanks to all these fans coming out to our shows, It means a lot. We can't wait to be back in Australia, it is a special place. I wish that we could have more days off between our shows Australia is a special place.
TM - Thank you for having this interview with us today we appreciate it.
