Hannes Van DahlSABATON
00:00 / 14:20
Twinmusix got to speak to Hannes Van Dahl from Sabaton about their upcoming movie and more.
TM - Hi, this is Amelia, Elizabeth and Harrison from Twinmusix we are here with Hannes Van Dahl, the drummer for Sabaton from all of us here we would like to say, how are you?
HV - Thank You for that nice introduction, I am super stoked to be here and talk to you guys.
TM - Could you tell your fans about the movie that is about to hit cinemas, we are all really excited for it to come.
HV - This is a movie we did on our tour to end our tour. We did this show in Amsterdam in the Netherlands with 16,000 of our closest Dutch friends. I assume other people from all over the world would want to be there. It was just one of those epic nights, everything came together so nicely and it was the biggest arena of the tour, so we decided to record it. We are super excited to get that out there for everyone to see.
TM - Can you tell us about how the idea came to create a movie. Most bands just to single songs but you did it an entire movie?
HV - The idea came out of a really good show. We came off stage and we were like that was an amazing show, we need to show this to people and share the evening that is where it started. Then we decided to put it in cinemas. I can't think of a better place to see a show than a cinema except being at a live show yourself. I'm sure that would be people's number one option but if you don't have a time machine you can't go back and see these shows. From audio to video to the big screen, I think it will be an awesome experience to see you in cinemas.
TM - I know you have put out previous concerts from Hellfest to Waken to other concerts, so how dose is this different to these other videos?
HV - What a great question, well number one I think it is the biggest headline show, we have ever done and it is a very different tour from what we have done before. This is not a festival show this is a headline show where we brought our full production, this was the headline to it to end all tours. Not to say too much but there is a red aeroplane and there are big letters up in the top of the stage, there will be an actress on stage, so it is more of an immersive experience there was also a ton of Pyro.
TM - You can't have Sabaton without Pyro. What is it like to sit on a tank every night with an actual working gun?
HV - Do you want the real answer or the cool answer.
TM - We will go with both.
HV - It is a very epileptic experience, so here's the thing when that thing fires up. I close my eyes, getting that close to ammunition is madness, it is very hot but I love it. If it is a bit chilly outside you can just ask them to bring the Pyro in a bit closer so it keeps you warm, but to be up on stage and play these places every night was magic.
TM - Do you remember how you felt on the night when you were playing on stage?
HV - There is an extra layer of nervousness when you know you are playing for a recording. We were a bit further in on the tour so we were comfortable with the setlist and the production and the theatrical parts of what is happening and the ques, which isn't much for me because I sit on the drums. The other guys have to know when to change their costumes, one guy coming up and shooting a flamethrower here or a flame thrower there, so that being said with the confidence of knowing that it will be a good show. That being said we can only go out there and play as well as we can.
TM - If you could have any band play one of your songs what band would it be, what song would it be and would it be in your style or their style?
HV - We did a cover of "Twilight of the Thunder God" which is a Amon Amarth song, so I would like to hear Amon Amarth do a Sabaton song, mabey The Lion from the North in their style.
TM - Are you coming back to Australia anytime soon?
HV - It is definitely on our to-do list, it would be weird if we didn't come back to Australia. We were over their last four Good Things festival and it was great.
TM - One of the greatest running jokes from that tour was the Great Emu War, so are you going to write a song about it.
HV - I think that was one of the best backdrops we have ever had. If you haven't seen the backdrop you should Google it. It was a crazy story the great Emu War and to do that back from drop was a little bit of a gag and the look on people's faces when they saw our backdrop was priceless.
TM - Are you bringing out any new music soon?
HV - We are working on the details of a new album and that is as much as I can say.
TM - That's all I need to hear, I'm excited and can you tell us about your warm up experience for a shoe?
HV - I broke my arm when I was 15 so it has been lucky ever since. I think I have to warm up a bit longer than other people because of my arm and that is the hour I need and the hour I have to warm up and get in the mental state of what I am going to do. I come down a bit and get those arms loosened up, I warm up on my drum kit and sometimes me and Chris would sit and jam out to Iron Maiden songs or practice. We didn't do right in other shows and stretch and drink some water.
TM - Is there anything else you want to say to your fans?
HV - Well first off, we are stoked to release the movie and we are looking forward to hearing what people think about it. It is a good show, it is a very neutral thing. It is the band and the audience that make a good show and then people say thank you for playing here we say thank you for being here because if you guys do not show up we do not play. We thank you, everyone that comes to see the movie and thank you to our fans who support us in our music and concerts.
TM - Thank You for this interview today it was great talking to you and we are all looking forward to the movie and we hope you come to Australia soon, the Australian Sabaton army needs you here.
HV - Thank you for having me.
