Twinmusix got to speak to Josh Middleton from Sylosis about their upcoming tour and more.
TM - Hi, This is Amelia and Elizabeth from Twinmusix and we are here with Josh from Sylosis, Thank You for having this interview with us today we appreciate it.
JH - Thank You for having me.
TM - You are coming to Australia, what can fans expect?
JH - we are very excited to come to Australia, for me it is my favourite place to go to. I have been there a lot with Architects over the years, the food and coffee are amazing. It is very similar to the UK personality-wise and sense of humour wise. I like Australia is just a long flight.
TM - What can fans expect from your setlist?
JH - We brought out our record at the start of 2020 before we went into full Lockdown so we are I'm making up for that one. The last two records translate better live so they will get a good look on our tour. We will ensure every record is covered in the set so it will be a big mix of songs.
TM - Are you working on any new music?
JH - We never really stop writing it is always such a long process that is constantly happening. We have a good chunk of material set aside for the next record.
TM - Do you write on the road?
JH - It is easier to write at home getting set up to write demos on tour is hard. Every now and then we noodle around on guitars In soundcheck and we might come up with things, but typically there's not a lot of writing going on tour for us.
TM - You also did a bunch of European dates like Bloodstock and Summer Breeze how is that?
JH - It was amazing, we had some great shows it was really fun to be doing festivals again. We had some technical issues at Bloodstock which means I had to do the first half of my set with no guitar which was fun because I enjoy singing but a lot of what people want to see me play guitar. We had some great shows in the UK and Europe.
TM - You also had a package where you could buy your meet and greet and a stage played guitar, will you do that in Australia?
JH - That is only for the American tour. I will have a bunch of guitars with me that I will play on stage and give to our fans who buy the package then we will meet after and hang out but there is only a limited amount of packages.
TM - If you could have any band play one of your songs what band would it be, what song would it be and would it be in your style or their style?
JH - I am a big fan of go Gojira, I look up to them. They are modern and they still sound good but I'm not sure what song mabey 'Calcified' which has a Gojira sound to it.
TM - What's your favourite memory watching someone else perform live, can you tell us a story?
JH - My favourite show was Slipknot at Reading Festival which is in my hometown. In 2000, I must have been 14 or 15 and I was a huge Slipknot fan. When I first saw them they had Metallica's sound guy and it was so loud, it is the best show I have ever seen. I was so excited and it was an amazing set, it was back in the day when they played in black, red or white jumpsuits. They would mix up the colours so half of them were black and half were white. It's not that big of a deal but as a kid I was like Woah it must be a special show for them doing this. I had seen a bunch of gigs before that but at that time I was super young and they were my favourite band. I remember being way at the back of the crowd thinking if I go to the front I'm going to get killed but my friend who was with me in Sylosis was like, nah let's go down the front and it was amazing.
TM - What's your favourite memory playing live?
JH - When Sylosis came back from hiatus. We had been off for 5 years and then played in London the start of 2020 then the pandemic hit. We have done shows since we brought out the new stuff and I really enjoy touring. The new stuff goes down a lot better and I feel like I have stepped up as a front man and a vocalist. I am a bit more confident in what I am doing but all the show's over the years have been fun and Summer Breeze was a fun one for us.
TM - Who was the first band you saw live and did they influence you to play?
JH - No, I started playing guitar before I saw my first band live when I was around 8 or 9. I think the first band I saw was Stereophonics in my home town but I don't like them, I just tagged a long with my sister and her friends. I was 12 years old but it was cool to go out to a show and see some live music.
TM - Is there anything else you want to say to your fans?
JH - It has taken us about 10 years to get back to Australia so I want to say thank you to the fans who have stuck with us and being patient in waiting for us to finally come back. It seems like Australia has picked up for us with the internet and the streaming. We are very excited to come back and we hope you see you all at a show.
TM - Thank you for having this interview with us today and I'm sure everyone is excited to have you come back.
