Twinmusix got to speak to Brett from The Juliana Theory about their upcoming tour and more.
TM - Hi, this is Amelia and Elizabeth from Twinmusix and we are here with Brett from The Juliana Theory, Thank you for having this interview with us today we appreciate it.
BT - Thank you for having me.
TM - What can fans expect from your Australian tour?
BT - We are touring in support of our second record "Emotion Is Dead" and hopefully we do a pretty fair representation of what the record sounds like and hopefully everyone has some fun.
TM - What's your favourite song to play live?
BT - "If I Told You This Was Killing Me, Would You Stop?" Is my favourite song to play live because people just get crazy every time we play that song.
TM - What can fans expect from your setlist?
BT - Besides playing the album "Emotion Is Dead" we will try and play some of our other hits from our albums and some fan favourites.
TM - What was your favourite memory from coming to Australia last time you came?
BT - It was a long time ago and I'm sure a lot has changed but it was a lot of fun last time we were there. One of the things that I remember is I was driving and I was driving on the wrong side of the highway and I looked out the window and I saw a kangaroo hopping the same path that we were taking. I was like woah that's crazy and that felt like the quintessential tour experience, driving Between Two Cities and looking over and seeing this mythical Australian animal. We had a great time and there were so many good memories.
TM - What's your favourite memory with your fans?
BT - What I have found inspiring is that people are now bringing their kids to our show who have grown up on our music. These 8 and 9 year old kids who have grown up on The Juliana Theory come to our shows, and it's the first show they have been to, and you see their wide-eyed enthusiasm for the world. It is crazy to think that you are part of something that has helped a parent and child Bond, and it is very humbling.
TM - What was the first show you saw live, can you tell us a story?
BT - I saw two shows within a few days of each other, the first show I saw was Rush in an Arena. Then I saw Fugazi in a 1000 person venue and I got to meet them after the show because they were hanging outside which was cool. Both bands were incredible and they shaped a big part of my musical DNA.
TM - What's your favourite memory of watching someone else perform live, can you tell us a story?
BT - I think around 2010 around 15 years ago the band Sunny Day Real Estate hadn't played in 10 years and they released that they were doing a bunch of tour dates and as soon as the tickets went on sale I thought I had to go to the show. The date got closer and the day of I was like oh man I don't want to go to the show, I don't like crowds and I don't want to be in this big crowd at that faze. I was only listening to old country music and I didn't know if I was in the mood, I was like I should go I bought the ticket. I remember I got there and I didn't know anyone at this show and I just went by myself. All of a sudden they started playing the song "In Circles" which was a huge song to me when I was young and this primal instinct took over and the next thing I knew I was not on the outskirts of the audience I was in the audience and pointing, yelling and singing along with everyone else. I was overtaken and I couldn't just stand on this side and be on the outskirts. It is a song that I love so much and a band that I loved so much and I love the nostalgia and everything attached to it overtook me. It reminds me of how important music is and how much we tie music into memories and places and things that people experience both good and bad. I think that was special because it took over the mood of I didn't want to be there and it felt euphoric and I felt amazing after being there.
TM - If you could have any band play one of your songs what band would it be, what song would it be and would it be in your style or their style?
BT - I would love to hear something in a completely different genre so I think The Beatles in their prime play "Into the Dark" off the album "Emotion Is Dead". Then there's another part of me that wants to hear At The Gates, Carcass or Mastodon play one of our songs. I could probably think about a Million Different answers for this question.
TM - Are you working on any new music?
BT - Yeah, we are finishing a new record this year. To me it sounds like all the best elements of our band filtered through today not trying to sound more than but not trying to sound like a throwback. I think all the stuff that made our band sound good we try to distil into this new record. It is hard to explain, it is emotional and nostalgic, poppy, fun and sad at times as well.
TM - Is there anything else you want to say to your fans?
BT - We are excited to come back to Australia and we cannot wait to come back and sing with you all.
TM - We can't wait to have you in Australia. Thank You for having this interview with us today we appreciate it.
BT - Thank you, hope you Have a great day.
