Twinmusix Interview Wintersun about their Australia Tour
What can fans expect from your Sydney show?
It's going to be a full headlining show 90 minutes plus playing the new album. And best of the time 1 album and best of the first album. We have been trying with different set lists and been seeing how it's going with the festival's. I think we have found the perfect set list and the band is really tight and playing alot of shows in a short amount of time. I think Sydney is going to be really good.
How often do you change your set list?
Every once in a while we get an idea about trying somthing else. For the summer festivals we had different time allaciotions for different shows so then we had to think what we could play. Our own shows we can choose how long of a set list we are going to do. We figured 90 to 95 minutes that's said good moment were we can keep it tight and energetic through the whole show. People can still enjoy the show and not get to tired. Now we have two new guys in the band. There is also new stuff going on while we are playing on stage there has been a pool of songs we have been playing and songs we haven't touched with this line up.
Who writes the music in your band?
Wintersun is jari's brain child so the writing process is pretty much 100% Jari. He has a clear vision and strong ideas so no one ealse in the band wants to change it. He knowshow to make the music sound like wintersun. The band comes in more in the recording process. More of the practical side of things how to arrange stuff and put the live set up together so on tour it's more of a group thing and recording is more a individual thing.
How did you come up with your band name?
Back in 2002/2003 when Kari was putting the wintersun project together he asked his friends for different segestions and he read through them all and one that really popedout was Wintersun because it felt like it described the feelingsand the mood of the music. It relates to the music because we get a lot of snow here in the winter and durning the summer there is some sun. If you look at the first album cover it fits perfectly.
If you could have any band play one of your songs which band would it be which song and in your style or there's?
It would be cool to see Metallica play one of Wintersuns songs playing Winter madness or eternal darkness it would be fun to see how they make their version out of that.
What guitars and rigs do use?
fractal audio axe-fx that we use a guitar processor that produces all the guitar sounds we have a wide range of presets that go through the song. Each song has it's own sound. The sounds change from section to section. We don't have any cabnets on stage we play all in ears and we go directly in to the house PA system as well. Line 6 wireless for our guitars and vocal microphones. We exclusively use Ibanez guitars and Basses. We have evertune bridges in our guitars which keeps our guitars in perfect tuning throughout the set. simplified setup, we carry our own monitor mixing setup, two mac book's running the orchestration slide that also handle the guitar presets changes so you don't have to tap dance on the peddle board's so we can keep the computer doing the sound changes and keep the stage clear of any external peddle board's. We have our own mixing desk.
What's your favorite gig memory?
The first time I saw Iron Maiden in 2003 that was a good time because I had been a fan of the band for a while. That got me into metal seeing them and singing along.
Do you prefer playing bigger or smaller venues?
It dose not matter the size of the venu if the people like the music if there's 500 people or 5000 people. The smaller venues are more intetment then the bigger venues. It's a different feel and how you interact with the audience and how you connect with them. When it's a big stage you can run around more. When it's a smaller audience you can't move around as much but you have more concact with the audience.
Do you have any fan stories?
Some people bring some funny thing's to sign I think I signed some passports, dollar bills or body parts.
Is there anything else you want to announce to your fans?
We are looking forward to coming to Australia. We are trying to go to as ment places as possible.
